Depart in the late evening for Chendor Beach, Cherating to visit one of the world's major nestling sites for the giant leatherback turtles - claimed to grow to lengths of 3.5 meters and weight up to 750 kilos. The best time to see them is from May to September, at night, especially at high tide.
The leatherbacks brief sojourn on land may take from two to four hours. It begins with a slow laborious crawl up the beach, above the high water mark. Here, she will dig a pit to fit her massive size. When the hole is sufficiently deep, she will lay her eggs. Then she will conceal the spot by throwing sand and bulldozing the surrounding area before crawling back into the sea.
