Take a pair of sparkling eyes and a duty to be done, add some merry maidens and two gallant gondoliers and, before you know it, you'll be dancing the fandango along with Opera Australia's finest Savoyards. Nothing is sacred not even royalty for the sharp wit of W.S. Gilbert, and so no one pulls a melody out of the air like Arthur Sullivan.
About the Story...
Oh, it's too much happiness! - Tessa, Act II
The impoverished Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro come to Venice in search of the heir to the throne of Barataria, inconveniently mislaid at birth and betrothed to their daughter. The most likely candidates are two handsome gondoliers, far more interested in parties than politics and, what's more, just married! It takes the help of the nursemaid to unravel the knots in this particularly twisty tale.
Nothing is sacred not even royalty for the sharp wit of W. S. Gilbert, and no-one pulls a melody out of the air like Arthur Sullivan. So prepare yourself for a treat because Opera Australia's celebrated production of The Gondoliers is back, styled with fun and laced with satire.
An all-singing, all-dancing cast of stars make up this evening of irresistible tunes and high-energy action. Reg Livermore and Judi Connelli brought the house down with their wicked double act as the Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro in Melbourne in 2006. With the Grand Inquisitor, Don Alhambra del Bolero, aka John Bolton Wood in tow, this comic trio are bound for Sydney. Antoinette Halloran and Taryn Fiebig reprise their roles as Gianetta and Tessa, and Kanen Breen is gallant Marco, while the Opera Australia Chorus will sing and dance the Fandango!
