Very few divers have discovered this astonishing part of Mexico - BOOK NOW!
The word cenote means 'natural water well' and is a corruption by the Spanish of the Mayan word 'dzonot'. Cenotes form by the collapse of surface limestone rock above underground solution caverns.
They played an important role in ancient Mayan cultures. It is believed that within the cenotes human sacrifices were offered to the Mayan rain god Chac Mool.
Cenotes can range from intricate cave-cavern systems to round or saucer shaped 'lakes' accessible to snorkelers.
Divers, be prepared to recover your regulator quickly, because it may fall out of your mouth in astonishment for so much beauty. The breathtaking formations in the limestone of these caverns are an exclusive privilege for the lucky few divers to enter the cenotes. Shafts of sunlight penetrate the fresh water, magically reflecting off the curves and peaks of the limestone.
Visibility of up to 60 meters/200 feet is not uncommon, giving you the powerful impression that you are floating in mid-air!
Many of the most beautiful cenotes have large sections where direct access to the surface is possible, and therefore can be enjoyed by most divers with minimum additional training, especially with a Cenote Instructor to accompany them, on hand throughout the entire diving experience!
