If you feel like you're falling in love the moment the curtain goes up on this magnificent opera, you're not alone. With a rustle of silk and a clink of glasses the curtain goes up on one of the world's favorite operas, Verdi's La traviata. Elijah Moshinsky's production is everything grand opera should be magnificent, extravagant and devastatingly romantic.
About the Story...
Be happy. Wine and song and laughter make the night! - Alfredo Germont, Act 1
Violetta returns to Paris after a year's absence and throws a grand party to mark her return to the demi-monde under the protection of Baron Duphol. Her guests have just completed a long lunch and the Baron is reading the last pages of a novel by Dumas to Violetta when Flora, a rival courtesan, enters with her protector, the Marquis. Alfredo has long been enthralled by Violetta, and begs Gaston to introduce them. Violetta insists that the company sit together and drink a toast to the occasion, and Alfredo sings a drinking song from Provence. The guests leave to dance in the ballroom below, and Alfredo re-enters and confesses his love for Violetta, but she asks him to return the following day. After her guests leave and she is alone, she reflects on the conflicting feelings inside her.
Violetta and Alfredo have been living together for three months in a house she has rented on the outskirts of Paris. Alfredo discovers that Violetta is selling her belongings to pay for their expenses so he leaves for Paris to raise money from his father. Alfredo's father persuades Violetta to give up Alfredo as his relationship with her jeopardises the family's honour. Violetta agrees to leave Alfredo immediately, and writes a message breaking off their affair. Alfredo is distraught and rushes off to wreak revenge on Violetta.
Alfredo enters a gambling party being held in Flora's house in Paris, and Violetta enters on the arm of the Baron. Alfredo insults the Baron so the two rivals meet over cards and Alfredo wins every hand. When the game is interrupted by dinner Violetta begs Alfredo to leave before Duphol tries for revenge. Alfredo insists she comes with him but she says she loves the Baron and so Alfredo publicly humiliates Violetta.
