In the cosmopolitan tradition of the French cabaret, Norbert Aleman's "An Evening at La Cage" take audiences into the quicksilver world of lipstick, high heels and nine button evening glove, but like it's namesake in Paris, the world of "La Cage" is one of illusion, where things are not always as they appear.
The illusion is carried off by nine female impersonators, headed by Frank Marino as Joan Rivers. But the illusions are more than precise re-creations - cast members seem to become the celebrity objects of their impersonations. First-time visitors to "La Cage" often feel like the viewer of a stunning work of art; at first there's wonder, perhaps curiosity, but as traditional perception gives way to intuitive response, there emerges a revelation of appreciation, an appreciation of the dynamic sensuality that permeates the production.
In addition to an expanded revue which includes the La Cage dancers, new state-of-the-art sound, lighting customs, sets and special effects are used to help create an aura of being in a room full of female superstars doing their best to entertain.
